Club Career:

Sochaux:

Martin was born in Paris where he began his career with Club Athletique de Paris at the age of six.

Martin claimed that when France won the world cup in 1998, that was when he had decided to become a professional footballer, and worked himself to the bone in order to make this dream a reality.

Two years later, Martin later joined Montrouge where he played with Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa but dissappointment followed when Ben Arfa had a successful trial with Clairefontaine Academy but Martin wasn't selected. After this disappointment Martin used it to motivate himself to once again train harded, and he was eventually rewarded.

Sochaux scout Christian Puxel spotted Martin in 2002 and offered him a trial right away and after impressing at his trial he signed a youth contract with the club in July 2002. He went straight into the acadamy where he devolped a friendship with future teammate Ryad Boudebouz. Jeremy Menez knew straight away Martin was a talent and told him to work hard and he will get the chance he craves - Menez was right because following the conclusion of the 2007/2008 season Martin signed his first professional contract agreeing a 3 year deal with the club.

After signing a 3 year deal with Sochaux, Martin was subsequently promoted to the senior team and assigned the number 26 shirt.

30th August 2008 - Martin made his professional debut on in a 2-1 league defeat to Marseille, appearing as a second-half substitute.

13th September 2008 - Martin made his first professional start in a 2-1 loss to Toulouse, and impressed enough to start the next 4 matches consecutively.

13th May 2009 - Martin scored his first professional goal in a 3-0 victory over Monaco.

Martin finished the campaign with 30 total appearances scoring only one goal.

In the 2009/2010 season (following the departure of Romain Pitau), Martin was inserted into the starting lineup as his replacement by Gillot.

26th September 2009 - Martin scored a goal in a 2-1 loss against Nancy and, in the following week, netted the winning goal against Le Mans.

21st January 2010 - Martin signed a contract extension with the club until 2014.

During this season, it was Martin's play-making abilities began to develop and flourish during the season as he assisted on match-winning goals in victories over Lorient, Rennes, and Lille.

In the Coupe de France, Martin contributed to the club's reaching the quarter-finals as he scored a double in a 4-1 rout of amateur club Beauvais in the Round of 16.

Martin finished the successful individual campaign with 40 total appearances, four goals, and four assists.

Martin's importance within the team was further made apparent in the 2010/2011 season. Martin made an instant impact by scoring his first goal of the season on the first game of the French League (14th August 2010) in a 3-2 loss against St-Etienne.

The following month, Martin scored a wonder-goal in a 4-0 victory over Nice.

Because of his great performances in midfield throughout the league campaign, Martin was one of four players nominated for the UNFP Young Player of the Year, along with Mamadou Sakho, Yann M'Vila, and Andre Ayew.

International Career:

In 2008, Martin was called up to the French u21s side where he would make his debut against Denmark where he started in a 1-0 victory. He would feature for all that campaign as France failed to qualify for the 2011 U21s European Championship, he wouldn't play U21s again.

After a successful 2010/11 season with Sochaux Laurent Blanc called Martin up to the national side for the June fixtures against Belarus, Poland & Ukraine and he described it as a 'dream come true'. On his debut appearing as a 2nd half substitue Martin entered a elite club as he became only the 4th player to score twice on his international debut, he shares that feat with France's all time best player Zidance & Jean Vincent a man who has won numerous titles and reached a world cup Semi-Final & Bafetimbi Gomis.

Club Statistics:

Sochaux (as of 13/06/2012): - 143 Appearances 11 Goals 30 Assists

General Comments:

It's clear to see why Martin is held in regard accross europe - he is the perfect player for today's game of 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, which ever way you look at it. His vision is just second to none and what I like mostly about the lad is that he oozes confidence and it rubs off on his teamates and you can see also his teammates love playing with him. He offers the team flair, creativity and sees passes you wouldn't think are there, whoever signs this lad in the summer will be better off right away.

He will leave Sochaux this summer and with Kagawa & Hazard leaving their clubs for England I would like to think Lille & Dortmund should really be pursuing this lad to replace either one mostly Lille as they have also lost Joe Cole who was on loan there, thus are looking for a player exactly like Martin.

{Ed022's note - I'd also like to add my opinion regarding Martin, as I believe he is a very quick footed individual who does have the ability to make things happen, and considering his ability would be fairly cheap. If you have any questions at all then feel free to leave a comment etc. Cheers.}
