There is so much to like about Marcus Rashford, when given the freedom to play as he can do. He has blistering pace, makes good runs, has the skill to beat a man and excellent technique to hit shots with power from all sorts of angles, with good accuracy. It is surprising that he struggled so much under Jose Mourinho, even though he never lacked for effort, which does not reflect well on his former manager.

It was pure luck he got his chance, the youth team right winger having to be thrown in as a striker during an injury crisis which even took the youth team striker who would have been ahead of him in the pecking order, Ashley Fletcher. Thanks to that shot, Rashford has become an established first team player and, on current form, one of the best strikers in the world.

When you watch Rashford play, you can see his roots as a winger, in the way that you could with Thierry Henry, with his tendency to drift out wide before cutting inside with the ball. Rashford loves to isolate players one-on-one and run at them, using his skills to get past them and in a place to either unleash a shot or put a cross in.

At his best, Rashford plays with freedom and joy, using his pace and intelligent movement to get in behind defences and create chances. The big issue I can see with him is that he struggles to cope when not given freedom, the instructions seem to weigh him down and cause him to second guess himself.

That is a worry for me, that he lacks the strength of mind or perhaps intelligence to follow tactical instructions. While he is good enough for that not to matter in 99% of games, there will be big important matches against top class opposition when he will need to work to a plan for the sake of his team. Those are the games that will matter most in a career, the ones that bring in trophies, so it is a real potential weakness for a player that has the quality to be a match winner.
