After emerging at a very young age with the Welsh national side, Wilson has had to live with comparisons to Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale. It does not seem to have been helpful to him, if anything it has very much gone to his head at times and his attitude in training has been questioned since his Wales debut.

Like those he is compared to, Wilson is a left-footed winger with good technique and skill. Wilson's technique is certainly unquestionably excellent, particularly when it comes to striking a deadball. He is very much a free kick specialist.

On the ball he is a very dangerous player, always capable of scoring a spectacular goal, with his excellent precise finishing. However that ability is not backed with the kind of work ethic expected at teams like Liverpool, which is why he is farmed out on loan.

Wilson is lazy in the press, lackadaisical at tracking back and generally does not do enough off the ball to really earn his place in a team. In fact, it is a major criticism of him that he does not contribute enough to matches, often going missing for long periods.

If Wilson is to make a mark at the highest level, then he needs to be more involved in games, to work harder on the pitch and become more of a factor. He should be giving opposition defenders nightmares, instead he is giving the full-back behind him nightmares having to cope with those he just watches run past him.
