Markelo is a very quick, strong and hard working winger, which is probably why Rangers were very interested in signing him in the summer when he was leaving Coventry. He also has a decent amount of skill, which can see him beat a man and his technique is good, on a quick look or a highlight reel you can easily think he has massive potential. However, watching him over a period of time makes you realise that he is one of those players that has little idea of how to use his attributes.

That pace and skill is often nullified by his inability to understand when to attack with the ball and his feet and when not to. Markelo also has a tendency to run into traffic, rather than using space, taking 3 or 4 touches too many before releasing the ball. The worst thing is his final ball though, he has good enough technique to usually deliver one into the box, but his decision making is hopeless.

If there is a crowd on the edge of the box stood waiting, he will dink it up in the air to them, so no one can get any power on a header and there is no space for anyone to take the ball down. When there is space in the centre and players running in to get on the ball, Markelo will almost always play the ball behind them, even when he has looked up and seen where the runs are happening. He does not show signs of good football intelligence at all, sadly.

The problem with him is exacerbated as his comparison point is probably the best player in Asian football, Guilherme Bala, whose injury gave him the chance to get into the team. Markelo is quicker, but Bala is so much more effective in every aspect of the game that it makes him look worse. Right now, it looks like Rangers dodged a bullet.
