Kelly has come a long way from Bristol that is for sure! He is a very odd one to review, as he is so inconsistent, as well as suffering a hell of a lot of injuries over the course of his career already. A player so inconsistent is difficult to review, as it is almost like having two completely different players to discuss.
What he does always have is power, which gives him pace, even on the turn, unusually for a big centre-back. He is also good technically, which enables Kelly to look very comfortable, most of the time anyway, at left-back, with a decent cross and good passing range. As a 1-on-1 defender, he does tend to be excellent, with the pace to ensure it is difficult for an opponent to get away from him, and the strength to force players away from danger.
Unfortunately, all the good things he can do will go right out the window some of the time. On his best days he is a bit rash, but gets away with it, on his bad days Kelly is erratic. He clearly struggles to maintain a level mentally, as it is down to errors or lack of confidence that he can just fall apart or do something so incredibly silly that you wonder if he has taken a knock to the head off the ball.
His initial performances at Juve were so bad that their fans were calling him the worst signing they had ever made. And that, in a nutshell is his problem, when playing regularly he usually gets gradually better and better, but it is not long until Kelly is back out injured. As soon as he comes back, he is back to being erratic.
