Verratti is close to being the complete central midfielder, as he is able to contribute effectively all over the pitch and has an excellent workrate to go with it. His technical and mental abilities are top class, but it is in the physical aspects of the game that he struggles, comparatively anyway.

His lack of height is an issue when it comes to aerial battles, Verratti struggles to win against anyone, though he is strong enough to make it difficult for opponents to make a clean header. The Italian also lacks a little in mobility, he tries to get round the pitch and gives his all but he does not have the pace of Kante, for example, to help him be everywhere.

What Verratti does have is a very good range of passing and vision, with great technique to pass it cleanly around the park and he has the quick thinking to make the most of his ability. He also has a good shot on him which can be effective around the edge of the box, though he really does not make the most of that part of his game.

That might be due to the players he has ahead of him, the big egos that would be unhappy unless there is an attempt to find them more often than not. Verratti is very much a pass-and-move player, of the kind that would suit a Pep Guardiola team, someone who can keep hold of the ball and work hard to regain it when the team does not have it.

His work off the ball is probably the best part of his game, he is constantly getting himself into position to receive a pass and always looking to get on the ball. When the opposition has possession, Verratti works like a trojan to get it back.

His biggest weakness is probably all the years he has wasted in such a weak league, where he is not being tested or pushed to perform better very often. With Mino Raiola as his agent, it is probably little surprise Verratti has chosen the easy money over the chance to push himself to the limits.
